The 2024 class of Leadership Aroostook recently completed their program by tackling two critical challenges affecting the county: housing availability and transportation access. The graduates, representing a mix of local businesses and organizations, presented practical recommendations aimed at supporting workforce growth and improving quality of life in Aroostook County.

Innovative Approaches to Housing

To address the local housing shortage, the group suggested creating a countywide housing trust that would provide affordable homes for employees of area businesses. The proposal includes guidelines to ensure homes are used as primary residences and encourages options suitable for both families and seniors. By developing smaller, cost-effective housing units, the initiative aims to make it easier for workers to settle in the region while freeing up larger homes for families in need.

Improving Transportation Access

Recognizing that transportation can limit employment opportunities in rural areas, the graduates proposed establishing a regional transit service. This system would connect outlying communities with key employment centers, reducing commute times and increasing access to jobs. The service is envisioned to support existing residents and make the area more appealing to newcomers considering relocation.

The 2024 Leadership Aroostook cohort emphasized that housing and transportation are closely linked, and addressing them together can create a more attractive and sustainable environment for workers and businesses.
